Abstract:
A shorter version was published in Bulgarian in "Varezki na savmestimost I nesavmestimost mezhdu hristiyani I musulmani v Balgariya" (Sofia, 1995). Based mainly on items in the press, explores the attitudes of Bulgarians toward Jews in the period of the National Revival (ca. 1800-1878). The negative attitudes of Bulgarians stemmed not only from medieval prejudices but also from two political factors: Jewish support (both in the country and abroad) for the Ottoman Empire, and the influence of Russian antisemitism. The National Revival press was more tolerant towards the Jews inside the Empire than abroad (e.g. Russia, Romania). Many revolutionaries (e.g. Lyuben Karavelov, Hristo Botev) expressed antisemitic views. However, the day-to-day contacts between Jews and non-Jews were marked by tolerance, except maybe during the period of the Russo-Turkish war (1877-78).
