Abstract:
Describes Hans-Jacques Mamlok (1875-1940), a German Jew who was a dentist, and who immigrated with his family to the United States in 1937, as the model for Wolf's play. The play was written by Wolf in exile, in Zürich in 1933, and it deals with the hardships of a Jewish surgeon under the Nazi regime. It is one of the earliest literary works on Nazi antisemitism.
