Abstract:
Discusses articles of the Yiddish-language journalist, Dovid Eynhorn, on World War II and Nazi Germany in the New York "Forverts" between 1940-45. Eynhorn, who was born in 1886 in Belarus, had lived in several Western European countries, including Germany, before emigrating to the U.S. from Nazi-occupied France in 1940. His experiences and his familiarity with Germany society enabled him to assess the Nazi danger more correctly than did the passive and gullible American Jews. Eynhorn argued that the Jews were the touchstone of all other people, and warned occupied countries against selling out their Jews in order to rescue their majority populations. Hitler's goal was to destroy not only the Jews, but also the values of freedom, equality, love, and truth. Eynhorn held the Germans collectively responsible for Hitler's crimes, and prophesied that the war would have disastrous effects on the morals of the younger German generation. A translation of his essay "Wenn die Nazi-Verbrecher nach Hause kommen", published in January 1943, is included.
Note:
Includes a German translation of an essay from 16.10.1943 (pp. 86-95).
