Abstract:
Surveys the phenomenon of blood libels in Poland in the 16th-18th centuries, and antisemitic literature of this period which propagated the belief in ritual murder. Underlines the role of Catholic priests in writing and spreading this literature. Describes a blood libel case which occurred in 1598 in Świniary and comments on the text of the verdict by the Royal Court in Lublin which found the three Jewish defendants guilty after they confessed under torture. The verdict was published at the end of the 17th century in a German journal in Leipzig, edited by W.E. Tenzel. States that his comments on the sentence did not doubt the credibility of the murder. The text of the sentence, in Latin, is appended.
