Abstract:
A study based on documents from the archives of the Jewish community of Debrecen. The Jewish population of Debrecen (northeastern Hungary) numbered 9,142 in 1941. During the war period, more than 1,000 men were inducted into the military labor service units, of whom 410 were killed or disappeared, according to the statistics of April 1944. In April of that year, the government ordered the establishment of ghettos - there was a small ghetto and a large ghetto - and the Jews had to move there by May 15. In June, 13,084 Jews were deported from Debrecen in four transports, to Auschwitz and to Strasshof. Half of the population was taken to Strasshof due to Kasztner's intervention; 75% of them survived. In 1946, there were 4,640 Jews in Debrecen; ca. half the population had perished in the Holocaust. In 1995, the number of Jews in the city was 1,300.
