Abstract: "Purim and bombshell" is the author's recollection of his visit with relatives in Tarnowitz (now, Tarnowskie Gory, Poland) late in the winter of 1873, at age five. It was Purim, and the Jews' celebration of the holiday was interrupted by gypsies. Many people were arrested, and because so many Jews were in costume, it was only at the police station that Jews were separated from gypsies.
Abstract: “The Schammes from Tost” is the author’s recollection of Yom Kippur in Tost (Upper Silesia, now Toszek, Poland) in 1878: Fire struck the barn that was owned jointly by many members of the Jewish community. The synagogue’s caretaker (Shammes) was also the town's fire chief, and he led the brave battle to contain the flames. The town's mayor honored him as a hero, and the entire community celebrated.
