Abstract:
Criticizes the methodology of some recent sociological surveys on antisemitism. Contends that using ambiguous questions, they try to identify the most antisemitic sector of the population and suggest that this relatively large group (ca. 20%) is the greatest threat to Jews. Meanwhile, in fact the picture is different: the entire American population has mixed views of Jews; it shares some prejudices against Jews, as well as against other ethnic groups, but hardly ever transfers them to the sphere of action. Moreover, many have good relations with Jews. Apart from this, there exists a small marginal group of genuine antisemites. Suggests that the Jewish communities in the USA expect to find aggressive antisemitism in the surrounding society because the struggle against it helps many individuals who have lost their connection to Judaism to maintain their Jewishness.
