Abstract:
At the Evian Conference on the refugee problem in 1938 the government of the Dominican Republic proposed an ambitious plan of agricultural resettlement of refugees in the Sosúa area. The Dominican Republic Settlement Association (DORSA) was created by the Joint to promote the Dominican proposal. However, the Sosúa plan failed. Only a handful of Jews found their way to Sosúa from January 1940, when the agreement between DORSA and the Dominican government was finally signed, until September 1941. Concludes that agricultural resettlement was not a viable solution for the refugee crisis.
