Abstract: Recalls the history of Conversos in Portugal and the life story of Captain Artur Carlos de Barros Basto (1887-1961), a soldier, writer, and liberal politician of Converso origin who returned to Judaism in 1919 and led a short-lived "Marrano renaissance" in northern Portugal. However, in 1927 the Portuguese republic was replaced by a right-wing military dictatorship. Barros Basto fell under suspicion and local Catholics attacked Marranos who attempted to return to Judaism. Barros Basto was accused of immoral practices, court-martialed, and dismissed from the army, and the yeshiva he founded was closed.
