Abstract:
Published in October 1984, this report states that under the impact of revolutionary upheaval the local Jewish community of Managua (Nicaragua) is disappearing. Contends that the Sandinista government is not antisemitic, as has been claimed, but that special measures were taken against Jewish businessmen because of their past dealings with the dictator Somoza, and many Jews viewed these measures as antisemitic. However, the present government's anti-Zionism may slip into antisemitism. This article is followed by an exchange of views between two experts. Cynthia Arnson (pp. 18-22) describes the "Jewish connection" with the Nicaragua problem as largely a creation of the Reagan administration and the ADL. Morton Rosenthal (pp. 22-24) explains the substance of that connection, and says that there may have been no "official policy" of persecution, but there was Sandinista harassment of Jews as Jews.
