Abstract:
In the anti-Vichy insurrection that took place in Algiers on 7-8 November 1942, which in fact paved the way for the Allied invasion of North Africa, 85% of the participants were Jews. The joint organization that prepared and carried out the insurrection emerged in 1942 as an amalgamation of several smaller organizations, two of which, the Géo Gras Groups in the city of Algiers and the group in Oran, were purely Jewish. The leader of the insurrection was José Aboulker, a Jew. Argues that the Algerian Jews who joined the resistance were motivated by indignation at the Vichy anti-Jewish legislation, especially the abrogation of their French citizenship. Despite the crucial role that the Jewish insurrection played in the Allied landing, the rights of the Jews of Algiers were not restored under the post-Vichy Darlan regime: it was not until October 1943 that Giraud's administration restored French citizenship to the Jews.
