Abstract: Polish literary texts of the Renaissance depict biblical figures positively but contemporary Jews are usually shown in a negative light. No connection is made between biblical Jews and their descendants, since Old Testament figures had become part of Christian culture. Analyzes some of the literary works of Rej, a 16th century Polish poet and writer. His negative image of the Jews was based on their non-recognition of Jesus as the messiah, for which they are condemned to eternal punishment. Contends, however, that Rej's texts, although they reflect religious anti-Judaism, are not antisemitic. The Jews were viewed as "strangers" because of cultural and religious differences, much as were Italians, Germans, or other foreigners.
