Abstract:
Lazar Gulkowitsch, who taught Wissenschaft des Judentums first in Leipzig and then, following his expulsion, in the Estonian town of Tartu, published the first monograph on the methodology of conceptual history in 1937, yet he remains totally unknown in this field of research. This article sketches his work on the history of Judaism and contextualizes it alongside approaches to conceptual history that were developed especially by Jewish intellectuals. A particular emphasis is here placed on Gulkowitsch’s categories of latency and explication.
