Abstract:
Still very young, Eugenio Mortara became known in the thirties forhis efforts in favor of German Jewish refugees who then found refuge inItaly. Both for racial and political reasons he had to move to Switzerlandafter September 8, 1943. However, even in exile Mortara continued hiscommitment to the Jewish cause. In the period immediately after the war,he played a very important role in the rebirth of the Jewish Community ofMilan, to which he dedicated his efforts for many years. He was also ableto combine intense activity for Jewish life with a brilliant entrepreneurialcareer. A character of all regard, therefore, a “respected and beloved personality of Italian Judaism” and a “great example”. This essay illustratesthe wide-ranging, multiple activities Mortara carried out during his Swissexile in favor of Italian refugees and deportees, Jews and non-Jews.
