Abstract:
This work compares two educational theories elaborated in the twen- tieth century, that of Lev Semyonovich Vygotsky and Maria Montessori. These two authors, almost contemporary but born in different countries and belonging to two different religious creeds, have opened new strands in their respective fields of investigation, theorizing an original and inno- vative vision of childhood. In this sense the socio-cultural elements of both authors are highlighted, especially the role that religion, Jewish for Vy- gotsky and Catholic-Christian for Montessori, had in forging their world- view also influencing the theoretical lines of their respective theories.
