Kurzfassung:
Distinguished Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral was the first Latin American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1945, and she is, to this day, the only Latin American woman to have done so. She felt deeply connected to the Jewish people as a result of her lifelong love of the Old Testament and various life experiences. For many reasons, I have felt a kinship with Gabriela Mistral—the woman, the author and the human rights activist—from an early age. Although we never met in person, she accompanied me in spirit throughout my childhood and later influenced my path to becoming a Jewish-Chilean poet. I hope, through these pages, to demonstrate how this extraordinary woman became one of the Jewish community's most passionate advocates. The three parts of this essay present a brief overview of Mistral's life; a personal meditation on the importance of Gabriela Mistral to me as a Jewish author and human rights activist; and a translation of Mistral's 1935 "Message About the Jews," to help readers appreciate the depth of Mistral's knowledge of and commitment to the Jewish cause.—Marjorie Agosín
