Abstract:
Presents Adalbert Stifter's 1842 novella as, inter alia, a text about Jews that is both replete with antisemitic stereotypes and suggestive of anti-antisemitic challenges to conventional thinking. Links the work with contemporary Austrian debates about the "Jewish question" and Austrian (and German) nationalism. In dealing with the ambiguity of the semiotics of the Jew in Stifter's work, concludes that the Jewish signs are polyvalent, i.e. ambivalent or unresolved, as represented by the graphic sign (anti-)Semi(o)tics.
