Abstract:
Presents a textual analysis of how the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation's television news channels dealt with the 50th anniversary of the "Kristallnacht" pogrom in 1988. While many documentary programs and movies about the Holocaust were shown at that time, the coverage on news programs was relatively scant. Of those which did deal with the subject, the moderators spoke of the enormity of the crimes committed by the Nazis, but tended to reduce the victims to statistics and to define the perpetrators as members of the Nazi Party rather than ordinary Austrians. Only one moderator gave a more personal and emotional tone to his presentation.
