Abstract:
Discusses the prevalence of Jewish-Christian intermarriage (specifically, Jewish male and Christian female) depicted in American films from the beginning of the century until the present, including television programs. The Hollywood moguls, most of them Jewish, viewed assimilaton as the solution to the "Jewish problem" of integration in America, a view adapted from the prevailing attitude of Gentile society. Queries why this view has persisted even in the post-Holocaust period, when Jewish specificity has been accepted in other spheres of life in America. Jewish producers fear that any conspicuousness (i.e. a romantic relationship between two Jews) will arouse Gentile animosity. Contends, though, that the present uniform denigration of Jewish relationships by Jewish characters can only serve to incite anti-Jewish feelings.
