Abstract:
Interprets the postwar (October 1945) petition in the London borough of Hampstead directed against "aliens" as being antisemitic despite its alleged aim of providing housing for returning ex-servicemen. The mostly Jewish refugees arriving at the time were depicted not as deserving victims but as the cause of problems. The petition, which asked for the refugees' forced repatriation, reflected not only lack of sympathy but also racism. This antisemitism under the guise of anti-alienism was supported by British fascists, such as Jeffrey Hamm.
