Abstract:
Against the background of the rise of the intellectuals in France as a social element and their crucial role in the Dreyfus Affair, examines the development of the views of the revolutionary linguist de Saussure. Despite the fact that some of his closest friends and colleagues were Dreyfusards, de Saussure was very slow to question the stance of the French establishment; only gradually did he realize that Dreyfus was the innocent victim of persecution and antisemitism, although de Saussure did reject the antisemitism of Drumont early on. Based on newly available manuscripts, traces de Saussure's views, concluding that, unlike other intellectuals, he neither arrived at the truth quickly nor took a public stand when he finally found fault with his government and society.
