Abstract:
Relates the different opinions of an Orthodox Jewish leader (Albert Lucas) and a Reform rabbi (Stephen Wise) on how to deal with Christianity's impact on the immigrant Jews, in this case in regard to the views and actions of the Christian journalist and social reformer Jacob Riis. In the late-19th-early 20th centuries, Riis undertook to help the poor and downtrodden Jews living in tenements on the Lower East Side of New York, but he also promoted teaching them about Christianity. Wise viewed him as a friend of the Jews, while Lucas viewed him as a foe.
