Abstract:
Over the last decade, there has been much academic and journalistic probing of the Malaysian prime minister's expressed negative attitudes toward Jews. He stereotyped Jews negatively as early as 1970 in his book "The Malay Dilemma". Examination of Mahathir's views may show, however, that his antisemitism is motivated mainly by anti-Zionism and solidarity with Muslim Palestinians (as well as with other oppressed Muslim minorities). He holds many ethnic prejudices, which, however, do not influence his policies, thus he cannot be regarded as a classical political antisemite. Moreover, a growing interest in Jewish issues among the Malaysian political elite may be attributed to the desire to discover or invent a "Malay diaspora", and thus to a kind of "diaspora-envy".
