Abstract:
Although the Polish composer Henryk Gorecki grew up both metaphorically and physically almost literally in the shadow of Auschwitz, his Third Symphony was not intended to be a memorial to the victims of Nazi atrocities. Despite several opportunities, Gorecki never completed a composition centered around war. However, marketing of recordings and performances of this powerful work in the U.S. and Great Britain have exploited the alleged Holocaust connection, which seems to have affected public reactions to the piece, especially between 1989-95 (the dates of important 50th anniversaries connected with World War II).
Note:
On his "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs", in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
