Abstract:
Focuses on the general avoidance of the topic of the Holocaust in five English-language Canadian newspapers and two news magazines during the last two years of the war. The genocide of the Jews was almost totally ignored. When treated, it was either minimized in scope or sensationalized. The latter approach heightened the general disbelief in regard to the Nazi genocide. Despite other possible causes, it is argued that the downplaying of the suffering of the Jews stemmed, at least partially, from covert antisemitism in the Canadian media.
