Abstract:
The First Earl of Shaftesbury (1621-1683) was appointed by the British government as the Lord Proprietor of the Province of Carolina. Francis Salvador (1747-1776) was the first Jew elected to a colonial public office; he served in South Carolina’s two Provincial Congresses in 1775 and 1776 and in the local militia during the Revolutionary War. He was killed in battle just after the thirteen colonies declared independence. Salvador was a Sephardic Jew born in London to a very wealthy family, which had business interests also in South Carolina. He emigrated from London to Charleston in 1773, married his cousin, became active in politics, and died as an American patriot.
