Abstract:
Discusses the dilemma of Jewish resistance fighters in the Vilna ghetto in July 1943, when the head of the Judenrat, Gens, demanded that they turn over their leader, Yitzhak Wittenberg, or be responsible for the destruction of the whole ghetto. Presents this dilemma as an example of the Nazi "social laboratory, " that in this case succeeded in dividing the Jews. Discusses both ethical and political dimensions of the dilemma, concluding that the resisters had no choice but to hand over their leader. Compares the situation with that of the resistance in the Warsaw ghetto, where political actions helped unite the Jews.
