Abstract:
Discusses possible causes for the antisemitism of the utopian socialist Charles Fourier (1772-1837), related to his upbringing in a strictly Catholic provincial milieu. The basis for his utopia was condemnation of commerce, banking, and usury. Discusses his writings and those of Alphonse Toussenel, who adopted Fourier's ideas but whose attacks against the Jews were much more violent. Shows how Fourier's antisemitism was transformed, within the span of half a century, into the extremely destructive ideology manifested in the Dreyfus Affair.
