Abstract:
Discusses "Maus" by Art Spiegelman as an example of literature written by children of Holocaust survivors, and the role their creativity had in dealing with their own psychological problems. Writing this book was a kind of catharsis for Spiegelman. Describes the figure of Spiegelman's elder brother, Richieu, who was killed in the Holocaust and use of his image in the book. In the last sentences of the book, Vladek, Spiegelman's father, uses the name "Richieu" when addressing Art. Concludes that calling Art by the name of Richieu makes him a symbolic survivor of the Holocaust.
