Abstract:
Discusses the role of religion in helping Jews cope with death during the Holocaust. Examines two categories of literature written during the Holocaust, which were hidden by their authors who did not survive. The first involves secular diarists' accounts of life in the ghettos, and the second is works by religious leaders: Rabbi Kalonymus Shapiro's "Esh Kodesh", written in the Warsaw ghetto, and Rabbi Y.S. Teichthal's "Em ha-banim smecha", written in Budapest. This literature is studied in relation to a number of key questions: how death was recorded; evidence of religious rituals concerning death; how the rituals helped people to cope with death; and the nature of theological debates at the time.
