Abstract:
"Le Matin"'s publication of a photograph of the "bordereau" in November 1896 permitted Mathieu Dreyfus to finally see the document which had led to his brother Alfred's arrest and conviction in December 1894, allowed him to print flyers demonstrating that its handwriting was different from his brother's, and resulted in the revelation in November 1897 that its true author was Major Esterhazy. Discusses the motivation of "Le Matin"'s owner for printing the "bordereau." Bunau-Varilla claimed, after Dreyfus's 1899 retrial, that he had published the "bordereau" to help exonerate Dreyfus. Others held that he had it printed to support the Army's claim against Dreyfus because "Le Matin" received secret funding from the French government. Concludes that the weight of evidence supports Bunau-Varilla's claim.
