Abstract:
Discusses interviews conducted with members of three generations of Danes, held under the auspices of the project "Vergleichende Tradierungsforschung" of the Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut Essen. These show that the grandparents, except in the rare cases of those who had Jewish friends, were not aware of the persecution of the Jews during the German occupation. To the extent that they know about the rescue of the Danish Jews in 1943, this is for them a tale of the Resistance rather than of the Jews. Many confuse historical details. While today there is sympathy for what happened to the Jews in the Holocaust, and an insistence that antisemitism is "un-Danish", the treatment of the Palestinians by "the Jews" in Israel is compared to the treatment of Jews by the Nazis.
