Abstract:
Describes the fate of Warsaw's Jews after the German occupation, and the establishment of the ghetto in 1940. Deals with the reactions of Poles who wanted to help Jews, the creation of the Council for Aid to Jews (Żegota), and the activities of various political bodies in Poland and abroad in order to inform the West about Nazi atrocities against Jews. Relates the organization of ŻOB (the Jewish Fighting Organization) in December 1942, preparations for resistance, and the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto, and repercussions in other ghettos. Underlines the passivity of the Allied forces, which did not undertake any rescue action, although they were well informed on what was happening to the Jews in occupied Poland.
