Abstract:
Discusses, on the basis of testimonies of Jewish survivors of the Holocaust, the fate of the Jews of Rome during the Nazi occupation. Describes Jewish individual strategies for survival, as well as the support of the local Italians who helped them by passive resistance or active involvement. Recalls the roundup in the ghetto of Rome on 16 October 1943, resulting in the arrest of some 20% of the Jews. States that Pope Pius XII and the Vatican did not protest publicly but only took some diplomatic steps (without result) to stop the arrests, as seen in the letters of Germany's ambassador to the Vatican, Ernst von Weizsacker.
