Abstract:
Expresses skepticism whether it is useful now, both from the theoretical and the practical standpoint, to define antisemitism as a form of racism. Being vaguely defined and emotion-laden, both terms were instrumental in the past, in the period of the struggle against certain social and political evils, and are maybe helpful for a historical analysis of them. Now, however, in many cases antisemitism and racism are hardly distinguishable from other forms of discrimination (religious, political, caste-based, etc.). This vagueness was manifested in 1975 when many UN members voted for the resolution equating Zionism with racism. Suggests that antisemitism must be regarded as an instance of group hostility, of a complicated but not necessarily racist nature.
