Abstract:
Am 4. Juli 1939 kann Helga Aichinger 17-jährig mit einem der letzten Kindertransporte nach England emigrieren, ihre Zwillingsschwester Ilse und ihre jüdischen Verwandten bleiben in Wien zurück. Am Tag der Trennung scheint die baldige Wiedervereinigung der Zwillinge nur noch eine Frage der Zeit zu sein, doch aufgrund des Kriegsausbruchs vergehen mehr als acht Jahre bis zum Wiedersehen in London. Der während der Jahre der Trennung geführte Briefwechsel ist ein berührendes Zeugnis der Hoffnungen und des Leids der einander vermissenden Zwillinge. Helga Aichingers Briefe aus den ersten Monaten bieten ein lebendiges Bild des Schicksals einer Jugendlichen im Exil. Von Ilse Aichinger erfährt man vor allem in den Nachkriegsbriefen viel über ihre Arbeit am Roman "Die größere Hoffnung", spürt aber auch am Ton der Briefe selbst, wie sie sich zur Schriftstellerin entwickelt. Die wenigen, kurzen Mitteilungen von maximal 25 Wörtern, die während des Krieges durch das Rote Kreuz übermittelt wurden, zeigen eindringlich, was Krieg und Vertreibung für Familien bedeuten
