Abstract: Compares the Aryanization of Jewish property in France and in Germany during the Shoah. With regard to Germany, discusses the case of Hamburg as described by Frank Bajohr in his book "'Arisierung' in Hamburg" (1997). Bajohr shows that the Reich, Nazi leaders, mafia circles, various German traffickers, and ordinary citizens enriched themselves at the expense of the Jews. In France, Aryanization began on the Germans' initiative, but was soon taken over by Vichy, which fought to keep Aryanized property in French hands and did nothing to protect the Jews or their property. Whereas German Aryanization took place under dictatorial rule, the Aryanization in France took place in a constitutional state, emanating from French "laws". French Aryanization was centrally controlled, with German Aryanization serving as the ratification of a process which had begun spontaneously in 1933. Discusses how Germany profited from French Aryanization. Germany did not lay its hands on big French Jewish enterprises; requisitions focused on raw materials, gold, currency, and especially art objects belonging to French Jews.
