Abstract:
Count Alois Lexa von Aehrenthal (Austria's ambassador to Russia between 1899-1906, and then Foreign Minister in 1906-1912), as a young official, held moderate reformist conservative views. He expressed vague antisemitism but never subscribed to radical antisemitic party politics. When the monarchic and aristocratic political order was threatened by revolutionary forces, he became an arch-conservative and absolutist; social and political disturbances were no longer explained by structural problems and social forces, but by a Jewish conspiracy.
