Abstract:
An excerpt from the authors' book "Roger Garaudy: Itinéraire d'une négation", due to appear in 2007. Deals with the impact of Garaudy's revisionist theses on Iran's state ideology. Traces his friendly relationship with circles close to the Shah in the 1970s and his conversion to an ardent supporter of Islamic theocracy after the Iranian revolution and then, in 1982, to Islam. After a pro-Iraqi interlude, with the publication of "Les mythes fondateurs de la politique israélienne" and Garaudy's condemnation in France for Holocaust denial in 1998, his close relationships with Iranian leaders were resumed. Iran and the Islamic world discovered Holocaust denial through Garaudy's trial; Iran has since become a haven and strategic center for Holocaust deniers globally. Holocaust denial as part of anti-Zionist discourse has intensified since Iranian president Ahmadinejad's rise to power in 2005, and has been endorsed by Hamas and Hezbollah leaders. In less than ten years, Holocaust denial, exported to the Middle East by Garaudy, has taken root in Iran, with Garaudy remaining its main inspiration.
