Abstract:
States that despite prevalent views, antisemitism in Western Europe is constantly declining. Surveys events in France, Belgium, and Germany and concludes, largely on the basis of polls, that there is a gap between reality and perception, including among the Jews in Europe, the U.S., and Israel. Attributes alarmist attitudes to a surge in media coverage and increasing sensitivity towards racism in general and antisemitism in particular. Discusses antisemitism amongst Muslim immigrants to Europe, and the worry of Jews and non-Jews in regard to radical Islamic fundamentalism and the Middle East conflict. There has been considerable criticism of Israel's policies, but most of those critics are not antisemites. Advises that, rather than crying out "antisemitism", the criticism should be confronted and countered.
