Abstract:
Discusses the presentation of the mass murder of Gypsies during the Holocaust in Israeli public discourse regarding the uniqueness of the Holocaust. Doubts the relevancy of the prevailing tendency of Israeli academic researchers of the Holocaust to distinguish between the Nazi mass murder of various population groups, such as Jews and Gypsies, according to the motives of the murderers, the thoroughness of the persecution, or the ideological arguments justifying these actions - especially since the perpetrators were not necessarily driven by the ideological distinctions of their leaders. Moreover, the Gypsies' postwar narrative of their persecution by the Nazis does not distinguish between Nazi anti-Gypsy and anti-Jewish acts. The Gypsies also regard their persecution during the Holocaust as a premedidated and unique attempt to annihilate their people.
