Abstract:
In 1837 a severe dispute broke out between the Catholic Church in the regions of the Rheinland and Westfalen, which had become part of Western Prussia in 1815, and the Protestant Prussian state. There were also clashes between Catholics and Protestants who took to the streets in Köln. Both the Catholics (led by Joseph Görres) and the Protestants (including the literary reformers of the Protestant Young Germany school, e.g. Karl Gutzkow), cast aspersions on the hypocrisy and the opportunism of those citizens who had allegedly changed sides. Converted Jews were specifically attacked as they had changed their religious identity and were therefore seen as unreliable.
