Abstract: The 1940 alliance between Bulgaria and Germany resulted in Bulgaria giving in to German pressure regarding the Jews. In 1941, King Boris III approved new legislation against the Jews and established the Committee for Jewish Affairs, with Aleksandar Belev at its head. In January 1943 Belev reached an agreement with the Nazis to deport 20,000 Bulgarian Jews. Strong opposition from the Church, intellectuals, and parliamentarians (especially Dimitar Peshev) led the king to search for compromises. He instead allowed the deportation of 12,000 Jews from Thrace and Macedonia in March 1943. The Nazis then pressured the Bulgarian government to comply with the rest of the agreed quota. Belev went ahead with preparations, but the king, compelled by the Church, politicians, and public opinion, stopped the deportations at the last moment, on 24 May 1943.
