Abstract:
Recounts the background to the Itzig (some of them Hitzig) family, wealthy Jews in 18th-19th century Berlin. The founder, Daniel Itzig, had many children. A daughter, Sara, married the banker Salomon Levy. She kept a salon, as did her sister, Fanny von Arnstein in Vienna (and later on their friend Rahel Varnhagen in Berlin). Karl Varnhagen (Rahel's husband) wrote an account of an incident which occurred in 1811 in the home of Sara Levy. Achim von Arnim showed up uninvited, wearing street clothes, and made fun of Sara's guests. Her nephew, Moritz Itzig, saw this as an antisemitic insult to his aunt and challenged Arnim to a duel. Arnim refused, stating that no Jew can possess the honor to engage in a duel. Varnhagen wrote about this 25 years later, but stipulated that it must not be known until after his death. Describes the lives of Itzig and Hitzig descendants, many of whom converted but some of whom remained Jews.
