Abstract:
Compares different versions of a Jewish literary adaptation of Shakespeare's play which aimed to counter the perceived antisemitism that had pervaded European attitudes toward Jews. Begins with the Hebrew novel published by Ari Ibn-Zahav in 1943 Palestine, entitled "Shylock, ha-yehudi mi-Venetsiah" ("Shylock, the Jew of Venice"). This novel was reprinted in 1947 and translated into Yiddish in the same year. The Yiddish version was serialized in the New York Yiddish daily "Morgen Zhurnal" in 1947, printed to coincide with the opening of Maurice Schwartz's Yiddish play "Shylock un zayn tokhter" which was based on Ibn-Zahav's novel. The Hebrew novel was translated into English and published in 1948 as "Jessica, My Daughter". Finally, Ibn-Zahav published a revised version of his novel in 1960, with a second printing in 1969. All of these adaptations created new and varying incarnations of Shylock that speak to the problematics of time and place. Notes disparities in the different versions and suggests some historical and cultural causes of these differences.
