Abstract:
Examines the pogrom which erupted in Homel on 1-2 September 1903. After the Kishinev pogrom in March of that year, the atmosphere in the city was charged. A Jewish self-defense group was formed by members of the Bund and Poalei-Zion. This self-defense was perceived by the city elites as part of the revolutionary movement, identified by many officials with the Jews. The September pogrom was not a spontaneous occurrence: it was prepared by the city leadership, with the aim of suppressing revolutionary activities; it was officials who incited the railway workers to anti-Jewish riots. The rioters had no religious motives. The pogrom may not be categorized as an ethnic clash or a "civil war", but as something in-between.
