Abstract:
Discusses the strong influence on George Eliot of her friendship with Emanuel Deutsch, a German Jewish scholar who emigrated to England in 1855 and became an assistant in the library department of the British Museum. Describes the condescending view of Jewish culture held by the "instructed classes, " particularly writers such as Carlyle, Coleridge, Dickens, Matthew Arnold, and Eliot herself, in Victorian England and their contempt for the inner, spiritual life of Jews. The turning point in Eliot's attitude came in 1866 when she met Deutsch, who is presumed to be the model for Mordecai in "Daniel Deronda."
