Abstract:
States that the physicians' role in the Damascus blood libel of 1840 has been neglected in historiography. The European physicians in Damascus at the time were called upon to testify about some bones alleged to be human remains, supposedly those of the missing monk and his servant. The hostile public climate towards the Jews and the authorities' tendency to find the Jews guilty did not leave much choice in the hands of these physicians, especially since their posts were governmental. All of them except one testified as the government expected them to, against the Jews. The exception was Dr. Amantia Lograsso; relates his story and how his true account was changed and silenced.
