Abstract:
Today, a reference to Sodom tends to enclose the reprobation of homosexuality within a biblical and sexual category. Peter Damian is said to have played a decisive role in this association, drawing on a heritage that he exploits in an argument oriented by the refoundation of the celibate clergy of the Gregorian Church. His reading contrasts, in its accents more than in its roots, with the exegetical doxa, the basis of the education of the Gregorian clergy. The glossed Bible and its substitutes help us understand the associations observed in this practice between Sodom and the faults which, ranging from idleness to heresy, may surprise a contemporary reader. The study puts the coherence of these approaches into perspective by considering their respective epistemological status.
