Abstract:
Discusses Swiss involvement with the Third Reich, examining three controversial aspects in present-day public and academic debates: the economic ties of Switzerland with the Third Reich, the role of gender in historical research on wartime Switzerland, and Swiss immigration policy. Argues that research on Swiss-Nazi economic ties is restricted to a metaphorical perception of neutrality and does not relate to the real reason why Nazi Germany did not occupy Switzerland. Proposes carrying out case studies, e.g. on Swiss firms which exported arms and on the dismissal of Jewish employees at German branches of Swiss firms. Calls for a reexamination of the clash between Nazi ideology and universal ethics. As to the topic of gender, research should be expanded beyond the restricted topic of Swiss women as mothers and housewives. Suggests an examination of the fate of Jewish women who lost Swiss nationality when they married non-Swiss men; it is not known how many of these women were denied entry to Switzerland and were killed as a result. As for Swiss immigration policy, claims that it was not due to Nazi pressure, but simply an antisemitic government decision.
